ROLE OF ADULT EDUCATION IN THE PROMOTION OF WOMEN'S RIGHTS AND OPPORTUNITIES IN UMUAHIA NORTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF ABIA STATE

ABSTRACT

The study examined the role of adult education in the promotion of women's rights and opportunities in Umuahia North local government area of Abia State. The main purpose of this study was to address the issues that limits women's rights and opportunities in Umuahia North local government area of Abia State. On the course of this investigation five (5) research questions were raised to guide the study. A total sample of 120 respondents were selected using a stratified and a proportionate sampling technique, whereby the adult education programmes were stratified into two namely; Literary Education and Vocational Education Programmes. Thereafter, fifty percent (50%) of the population were adopted as sample size of the study. The descriptive survey research method was adopted for the research design and thus the data for the study were collected with the use of self-structured questionnaire. After expert's validation of instrument, internal consistency reliability was adopted. The reliability coefficient was determined through Cronbach alpha coefficient of 0.71. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics which basically involve frequency count, simple percentages, as well as mean score analysis and standard deviation. Based on the findings of the study, it was discovered that women in Umuahia North local government of Abia State have several opportunities. The study concluded that there is a very low awareness level by women with respect to their ability to know their rights in Umuahia North local government area of Abia State. As well as the key factors that help to promote women's rights in Umuahia North local government of Abia State. The study proffered a number of recommendations which include the need to generate awareness in terms of significance of women's education, rights and empowerment opportunities. For women to contribute significantly to achieving sustainable development goals in Nigeria, they must be empowered educationally, socially, economically and politically in this technological age.
