ABSTRACT
This project was executed at the Department of Soil Science and Land Management in the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria in the year 2024. The review was carried out to determine the response of some leafy vegetables (Scentleaf, Bitterleaf, Waterleaf, Celosia, Amaranth and Fluted Pumpkin) to poultry manure application in terms of plant growth and leaf yield, including pod yield in the case of fluted pumpkin. Literature review of poultry manure trials on these vegetables was done spanning year 2010 to 2020. The Poultry manure used were majorly sourced from local poultry farms in various locations around the regions where the trials were carried out. The Poultry manure were cured and allowed to fully decompose before it's application to the soil, because application of fresh manure to plants will result in plant roots getting burnt. It was observed that these vegetables received poultry manure at different rates and at different research locations. The various growth parameters, recommended rates and yield values of the selected vegetables were reviewed. Celosia and Amaranth received more Poultry manure trials than the other vegetables. Scentleaf, Bitterleaf and Waterleaf had the least amount of trials because much research has not been carried out in respect to these vegetables. Arising from this review, bitter leaf requires 12 t/ha of poultry manure for optimum yield, scent leaf requires 6.5 t/ha of poultry manure for optimum yield, waterleaf requires 10 t/ha of poultry manure for optimum yield, Amaranth vegetable requires 15 t/ha of poultry manure for optimum yield, Celosia requires 15 t/ha of poultry manure and Fluted pumpkin pod requires 15 t/ha of poultry manure.
