RESPONSE OF UREA FERTILIZER ON FLUTED PUMPKIN AND SOIL PROPERTIES

ABSTRACT

An investigation was conducted to find out the response of Urea fertilizer on fluted pumpkin cultivation and soil properties at the University of Benin, Nigeria. The treatments were Urea Fertilizer on Fluted Pumpkin at three levels replication, four times in a Randomized Complete Block Design. In addition N:P:K:Mg was used to boost the soil to gain some nutrients in the soil. Plant Parameters measured were Vine length, number of leaves, number of Branches and leave area of fluted pumpkin. Result showed that there were significant difference between control plots and the treatment plots at different stages of growth. Similarly, significant differences were observed in the number of leaves and branches between control and treatment plots. Fresh yield analysis revealed that the control plot had the highest yield, significantly higher than plots with lower fertilizer application rates. The study assessed soil properties before and after planting, Initially, the soil exhibited moderate acidity, low organic carbon and nitrogen, deficient potassium, and moderate levels of calcium and magnesium. High sulphur content and exchangeable acidity were noted. Post-Planting, pH levels varied significantly, with control plots remaining extremely acidic and treatment plots ranging from strongly acidic to neutral. Organic carbon decreased in treatment plots, total nitrogen decreased overall, and available phosphorus decreased in treatment plots but remained high in the control. Potassium levels remained low overall, and calcium and magnesium levels decreased. Sulphur content remained high and exchangeable acidity remained low and similar across all plots. Since there were serious limitations encountered in the experiment it will be suggested to do a further experiment to address the limitations
