ABSTRACT
This study evaluated resource control agitation and its effect on political stability in the South-South geo-political zone of Nigeria using Delta state as a case study. In order to achieve the aim of the study, four research questions were raised to guide the researcher.
The study employed a descriptive research design. This kind uses primary data from a self-administered standardised questionnaire which served as instrument for data collection. The face and content validity was used in determining the validity of the instrument while the split half reliability was deployed to test its reliability.
Findings from the study revealed that destruction and degradation of the environment-land, air and eater, deprivation from being active participants in the oil industry, poverty and unemployment etc were among the causes of resources control agitation in the South-South region of Nigeria. The research also revealed that agitation has over-heated the polity of the South-South states especially Delta state. It has led to thuggery, election violence and on the positive side raised the consciousness of the people towards participation in political activities. The study also shows that the problem of resource control agitation can be solved only through the practice of true fiscal federalism as it is practised in the United States of America and during Nigeria’s first republic between 1960 and 1966.
