ABSTRACT

Many countries have realized that biogas as a source of energy is an important component for sustainability transition. However, the total production volume of biogas is still relatively low. This literature review explores the multifaceted challenges hindering the widespread adoption and domestic application of biogas technology in Nigeria. The review synthesizes existing research and highlights the technical, economic, social, and policy-related obstacles that impede the integration of biogas into household energy systems. By identifying these challenges, this review aims to inform policymakers, researchers, and practitioners on strategies to overcome barriers and promote sustainable biogas utilization. The difficulty of maintaining a sustainable energy supply and secure waste management faces the majority of Nigerian governments. In addition to being an environmentally friendly form of disposal, anaerobic digestion satisfies the criteria for sustainable alternative fuels. One of the greatest methods to overcome these difficulties is to produce clean alternative biogas energy from trash. This study evaluates the potential for biogas production from organic waste in Nigeria using a bottom-up resource-oriented methodology. Analyzing the possibilities of using the available organic waste during anaerobic digestion is the goal. The analysis summarizes various studies conducted between 2001 and 2019 on this subject, and its key findings are utilized to draw conclusions on the significance of turning these organic wastes into biogas.
