Violence and The Contract are novels of social realism that mirrors the Nigerian Society. Festus Iyayi is a voice that calls for change in the Nigerian society, he explains that; “my own escape from that kind of life has not blinded me but has provided me with the opportunity of exposing those appalling conditions in which my roots are still trapped”.
Despite Nigeria’s oil wealth and arable agricultural land, Nigeria still struggles with corruption, inequality and exploitation resulting from the reckless spending of the government and failed utilization of the nation’s resources and wealth which has led to the increases rate of poverty. Festus Iyayi’s novels criticize the Nigerian system of government as he holds them responsible for the problems that plague the country. Iyayi exposes the injustice and sufferings of the masses that appear to be trapped in the endless cycle of distress and pain or what Iyayi regards as Violence which is exploitation, brutalization and dehumanization of the masses by the government.
