ABSTRACT

The current study compares the usage of raw sawdust to chemically activated sawdust as an adsorbent for the retention of copper (II) ions from synthetic aqueous solutions, undertaking acid (citric acid) and alkaline (sodium hydroxide) treatment of sawdust with a view to investigating the effect on the adsorption performance. To evaluate the effect of initial concentration of copper ions on the removal efficiency of raw, acid-treated and alkaline-treated sawdust in batch systems. And also, to determine the equilibrium relationship between the metal ions adsorbed and the metal ions remaining in solution using selected isotherm models. This study compared the removal of Cu (II) ions from an aqueous solution by adsorption on unmodified sawdust (SD), sawdust modified with citric acid (CASD), and sawdust modified with sodium hydroxide (NHSD) with stirring at ambient temperature, pH value of 5, and 200 rpm. Cu (II) ion removal requires 100 mL of sample volume and initial concentrations of 10 mg/l, 20 mg/l, 50 mg/l, 100 mg/l, and 200 mg/l of Cu (II) ions. To validate the information received from the isotherm models, the correlation coefficient (R2) was used. When Langmuir and Freundlich equations were used to analyze the observed data, it became clear that the Freundlich isotherm model for Cu (II) ions adsorption provided the best fit to the experimental data for SD, CASD, and NHSD. Finally, a fascinating prospect for the treatment of secondary and tertiary wastewater is the use of sawdust as a potential non-traditional sorbent for the removal of copper.
