ABSTRACT
This study examined the religious significance of new yam festival in Uromi. The method of this work was historical and analytical. The study carefully examined the origin of the new yam festival in uromi and the impact of new yam festival. The primary sources were: textbook, research materials, while oral interviews serve as the secondary source. The study investigated the new yam festival in Esan north-east local government area. A careful study of how the new yam festival is celebrated, the economic, religious, social and political impact of the festival was covered.
The researcher concluded that new yam festival in Uromi was a major heritage handed down to them by their ancestors. The new yam festival is an essential part of the Uromi culture. It was also concluded that the new yam festival (lhuan) is important for spiritual upliftment of the people of Esanland.
It was recommended that proper enlightenment should be carried out among the people in order to educate them on the economic, religious and social impact of the new yam festival. The people should be made to know that new yam festival is not a fetish festival but a cultural symbol and heritage which must be kept.
