ABSTRACT
Background/purpose of the study: Regular engagement in physical exercise is a fundamental aspect and core element of a healthy lifestyle, contributing substantial physical and mental benefits to the general population at large. Physical exercise plays a crucial role in preventing a wide range of chronic illnesses and premature mortality. Numerous studies have indicated the negative relationship between physical exercise and factors such as depression, suicidal behaviour, perceived stress, anxiety, and suicide attempts. Conversely, there is a positive association between physical exercise and self-esteem, self-efficacy, and life satisfaction Therefore, the purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between physical exercise and mental health among healthcare professional student in University Methods: Convenience sampling technique was used in recruiting (317) participants for this study. The international Physical Activity Questionnaire Short-form (IPAQ-SF) was used to determine the level of physical exercise among healthcare professional students of the University of Benin, Benin City.While The General Health Questionnaire (GHQ -12) was used to assess level of mental status among healthcare professional students. Descriptive statistics of frequency, mean and standard deviation and percentages was used to summarize participant’s socio-demographic variables (gender, age, department and level). Result: The result of the present finding shows that there appears to be a gradient relationship, where higher levels of physical exercise are associated with better mental health outcomes. Among respondents with low physical exercise levels, a larger proportion reported moderate mental health status compared to those with moderate or high exercise levels Conclusion: The study highlights a significant relationship between physical exercise and mental health among University of Benin healthcare professional students. While most students exhibit moderate mental health status, higher levels of physical exercise correlate with better mental health outcomes.
