RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INTRAOCULAR PRESSURE AND REFRACTIVE ERRORS OF MYOPES AND HYPEROPES FROM THREE SELECTED CLINICS IN BENIN CITY

ABSTRACT

Intra ocular pressure (IOP) is the fluid pressure inside the eye measured by the magnitude of force exerted by aqueous humor on the wall of the anterior eye. Refractive errors are vision problems arising from inaccurate focusing of light on the retina as a result of the shape of the eye or cornea. Intra ocular pressure and refractive errors both play a crucial role in the pathogenesis and progression of ocular problems. To investigate the relationship between intra ocular pressure and refractive error of myopia and hyperopia in Benin metropolis. A retrospective study which involve the review of one thousand (1000) record card of patients seen from June 2020 - June 2023 in three selected clinics (St philomina, St Theresa and military eye clinic). Two hundred (200) of the patients aged between 18-50years consisting of one hundred myopes and one hundred hyperopes free from all forms of systemic and ocular diseases were selected for the study. Data collected include the age, refractive correction and intra ocular pressure readings. data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22.0. Descriptive statistics (percentage, mean and standard deviation) which describes the characteristics of the study. Pearson Correlation statistics was used to determine the relationship between refractive errors and intraocular pressure.The results showed that the mean age of the study population was 24.3 ± 1.76. Statistically there is a significant relationship between intraocular and myopia (p<0.005), however there is no significant relationship between intraocular pressure and hyperopia (p>0.005).Inconclusion therefore The study will broader knowledge of eye care practitioner on the relationship between refractive error and intraocular pressure. This would also encourage the need for routine intraocular pressure checks on patients with refractive error. Thus helping with early detection and management of intraocular pressure on patient with refractive error thereby preventing possible development of glaucoma.
