REDUCTION OF EC AND TDS VALUES OF FISH POND WASTEWATER USING COPPER CATALYSED FENTON REACTION

ABSTRACT

This study aimed at the utilization of the Fenton reaction catalysed by copper in the treatment of wastewater derived from fish ponds.  The objective of this research was the determination of the efficiency of the copper catalysed Fenton reaction in wastewater treatment by measuring the total dissolved solids (TDS) and electrical conductivity (EC) content associated with the treated wastewater samples. The parameters (pH, TDS and EC) were measured using calibrated meters. For sample A, the pH at 0 hours was the highest (2.72) and the least value was 2.03 after 36 hours. For sample A, the TDS value varied from 304.9 mg/l at 12 hours to 334.9 mg/l at 36 hours. For sample B, C and D, the TDS values ranged from 271.9 mg/l at 12 hours to 301.9 mg/l at 36 hours. For sample A, the EC value ranged from  649.8 µS/cm at 12 and 24 hrs to 679.8 µS/cm at 36 hours. For sample B, C and D, the TDS values ranged from 583.8 µS/cm at 12 hours to 613.8 µS/cm at 36 hours. For fenton treated wastewater samples A and C, both the TDS and EC concentrations reduced from 0 hour to 12 hours but the final TDS value at 36 hours was higher than values observed at 12 hours. Other studies have shown the Fenton reaction process to be effective in the reduction  of organic water quality parameters such as chemical oxygen demand and  biochemical oxygen demand.
