ABSTRACT
The geospatial reference framework of any region plays a fundamental role in various applications such as surveying, mapping, infrastructure development, and navigation. This project focuses on the essential task of redefining the University of Benin's geodetic control network, which currently relies on the Minna Datum, to the modern and globally recognized International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF) 2014 geocentric coordinate system. This project involves a comprehensive surveying and geodetic adjustment campaign, including the establishment of ITRF 2014-compatible control points across the University of Benin campus and its surrounding areas. The process will encompass precise measurements using advanced GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) equipment, data analysis, and the transformation of existing data to the ITRF 2014 coordinate system. By redefining the University of Benin controls in the ITRF 2014 geocentric coordinate system, this project aims to enhance the accuracy and reliability of geospatial data for various applications, including land management, infrastructure planning, disaster management, and scientific research. Furthermore, this initiative aligns the institution with contemporary geospatial standards, fostering collaboration with the global geodetic community and ensuring the compatibility of its data with international systems. The successful completion of this project will contribute to the modernization of geospatial practices at the University of Benin, empower researchers and professionals with more accurate and reliable geospatial data, and serve as a model for similar initiatives in the region. Ultimately, this endeavor supports the institution's commitment to academic excellence and its contribution to sustainable development in Nigeria and beyond.
