ABSTRACT
This research study was primary aimed at finding out the “Reasons for and Influence of Drug Abuse among Senior Secondary Schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. Drug abuse is the excessive and persistent self-administration of a drug, without regard to the medically accepted patterns. To achieve this objective five research questions were raised for the study. The population of the study was randomly selected. A total of two hundred and eighty-nine respondents from six senior secondary schools were used for this study. The research instrumentation used for the study was the questionnaire. The data collected were analysed using simple percentages, mean and t-test.
The findings of the study showed that majority of the students in Egor Local Government Area engage in drug abuse. Most of the respondents attributed the reasons for drug abuse to parental failure or inability to care properly for their children or ward. Many of the respondents agreed that drug abuse has negative influence on the victims. The t-test analysis of the hypothesis revealed that there is no significant difference between males and females involved in drug above in the Local Government Area.
Drug abuse among public secondary school students in Egor Local Government calls for concerted efforts by all stakeholders (including teachers, parents, educational officers and other government officials) to fight the vice and make schools a better place for current generations and generations to come. The abuse of drugs may directly impair academic abilities which limit their academic performance.
