ABSTRACT
Literature often serves as a mirror to human experiences and societal dynamics, offering insights into cultures, values, and perspectives from different times and places. The decisions of individuals can contribute to the collective outcomes in society. The choices people make collectively shape the environment, culture, and events that unfold around them. The essay employs Existentialism and Psychoanalytic Theory to analyze the process of identity formation, its significance, and the factors influencing it in Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man and Richard Wright's Black Boy. The challenges of identity formation from Childhood to adulthood and basic adulthood are compared and the findings include: environment, society and family are responsible for the process of identity formation, while racism and segregation are the factors that affect this formation as portrayed by Ellison and Richard. The essay concludes that, Individuals understand themselves, connect with others, find empowerment, make informed decisions, and contribute to cultural and social change. It is a lifelong process that continues to evolve and shape our lives.
