ABSTRACT
PICRALIMA NITIDA, commonly known as Akuamma, is a tropical plant widely distributed across West Africa, prized for its various medicinal properties. The stem bark of PICRALIMA NITIDA has been of particular interest due to its potential saponin content, which is known to possess numerous pharmacological benefits. This study aimed to quantify the total saponin content in the stem bark of PICRALIMA NITIDA using a combination of extraction and spectrophotometric methods. Stem bark samples were collected, dried, and finely powdered before undergoing a stepwise solvent extraction process. The crude extract was then subjected to a series of chemical assays to determine the concentration of saponins present. Spectrophotometric analysis was employed to measure the absorbance at specific wavelengths and calculate the total saponin content in the stem bark. The results of this study revealed a significant concentration of saponins in the stem bark of PICRALIMA NITIDA. This finding suggests that the plant's stem bark could be a valuable source of saponins, which are known for their diverse applications in traditional medicine, cosmetics, and the pharmaceutical industry. Further research is warranted to explore the potential therapeutic benefits and applications of these saponins, which could contribute to the development of new medicines and health products. In conclusion, the stem bark of PICRALIMA NITIDA contains a substantial quantity of saponins, opening up possibilities for its utilization in various industries. This research provides a foundation for future studies on the isolation, purification, and characterization of these saponins, as well as their potential contributions to human health and well-being.
