ABSTRACT
Polyherbal formulations are highly effective in treating various illnesses by combining potent multiples herbs in specific ratios that can enhance therapeutic effects and minimize any potential toxicity. The aim of this study is to quantify some phytochemical constituents, some nonenzymatic antioxidants and to evaluate the antitussive, expectorant, and analgesic properties of polyherbal-formulated tea (Curcuma longa, Citrus limon, Zingiber officinale, Allium sativum, and Moringa oleifera). Some phytochemical constituents and some non-enzymatic antioxidants of the polyherbal tea were evaluated using colorimetric methods. The antitussive activity of the tea was analyzed using citric acid-induced cough in guinea pigs and ammonium-induced cough in mice. The expectorant activity of the polyherbal-formulated tea was evaluated using phenol dye secretion in mice. The analgesic properties of the tea were analyzed using hot plate-induced and acetic acid-induced writhing animal model. The result shows that the polyherbal-formulated tea contains phenolic compounds (53.57±1.96 mg/g), alkaloids (40.93±5.96 mg/g), flavonoids (99.44±1.96 mg/g), vitamin C (862±18.76 mg/g), carotenoid (5200±6.93 mg/g) and Lycopene (19.50±1.35mg/g). The polyherbal-formulated tea reduced the number of cough bouts and increased the percentage of cough Suppression in citric acid-induced cough when compared to control (**P < 0.01). And in ammonium-induced cough, the tea reduced the number of cough bouts in mice when compared to control (****p < 0.0001). The polyherbal tea increased phenol dye secretion compared to control. (**P < 0.01) in the expectorant experiment. In hot plateinduced pain, the polyherbal tea increased the latency of the pain threshold in mice. (*P < 0.5). Also reduced the number of writhings and increased the percentage of pain inhibition when compared to control (**P < 0.01) in acetic acid-induced pain. Conclusively, the polyherbalformulated tea has antitussive, expectorant, and analgesic properties.
