ABSTRACT

This study was designed to ascertain public sector management; strategies in Nigeria using the Oredo and Egor local government, Benin City, Edo State. Five (5) research questions were formulated to guide the study. The objectives of the study includes to investigate the role of the public sector administration/management on national development, determine the effects of poor public sector administration/management, ascertain the causes of administrative ineffectiveness in Nigeria’s public sector, identify factors contributing to administrative/management ineffectiveness within Nigeria's public sector, and access the strategic imperatives for attaining administrative effectiveness and efficiency in Nigeria’s public sector

The study adopted a descriptive survey. The population of this research consisted of all the 1117 junior and senior local government staffs, in Egor and Oredo local government area, Benin City, Edo State. The sample size of this study consisted of 100 staffs randomly selected from Egor and Oredo local government who served as the respondents. The research instrument for the study was a Questionnaire titled: Public Sector Management Strategies in Nigeria (PSMSN), which was distributed to the respondents and collected immediately after completion from respondents. The simple percentage and mean score was used in computing the responses of the questionnaire items. To account for the reliability of the study, the Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used which gave a value of 0.83.

The study reveals the positive impact of the public sector on national development, including economic growth, social development, and political stability. However, it also identifies concerns regarding the negative effects of poor public sector administration, such as hindrances to economic growth, social service delivery, political stability, and increased corruption. The causes of administrative ineffectiveness include training gaps, political interference, budgetary constraints, and underutilization of technology. Proposed solutions focus on comprehensive training, anti-corruption measures, and enhanced technology integration to improve overall efficiency in the public sector.
