ABSTRACT
Phyllanthus amarus commonly known as "stonebreaker" is a tropical plant that has been used for centuries in traditional medicine. It is known for its potential medicinal properties, particularly in the treatment of kidney stones, liver disorders, and various gastrointestinal issues. This study evaluated and compared the nutritional and phytochemical components of the raw and ethanol leaves of the plant. Proximate analysis revealed that both raw and ethanol leaf extracts are rich in carbohydrates, with moderate protein as well as adequate moisture content for preservation however, low in fat, ash, and crude fibre, For the minerals, the raw extract and the ethanol extract is rich in K, Mg, Ca, Na, and P, moderate level of Fe; but low in Zn, Cu, and Mn. Phytochemical evaluation revealed that both raw and ethanol extract leaves have high contents of alkaloids, and saponins, moderate in tannins, flavonoids, phenol, and steroids. However, the presence of phlobatannins, terpenoids, carbohydrates, reducing sugars, amino acids, and xanthoproteins. oxalate, quinones, and anthroquinones were detected in raw and ethanol extract of Phyllantus amarus. The present study demonstrated that P. amarus is a valuable plant for nutraceutical and dietary supplements.
