ABSTRACT

In this study, the proximate and mineral composition, qualitative and quantitative phytochemical constituents and in vitro antioxidant capacity of the methanol extract of Spondias mombin stem bark was carried out. Proximate analysis revealed the percentage of moisture, ash, fat, fiber, protein and carbohydrate of 3.0 ± 1.0, 10.5 ±0.5, 2.75 ± 0.25, 6.5 ± 0, 11.34 ± 0.06 and 65.96 ± 0.74, respectively respectively. Macro elements; Calcium (33.63), Potassium (20.81), iron (1.93), sodium (2.38), and magnesium (2.74) and trace elements such as copper (0.83), manganese (3.88), lead (0.37) and zinc (2.59) were also detected in the plant extract (values were expressed in mg/100g). In the phytochemical screening of the stem bark extract of Spondias mombin, flavonoids, phenols, and other bioactive compounds were present. The in vitro antioxidant capacity of the plant extract studied, showed a high reductive ability. However, the standard (ascorbic acid) had the highest antioxidant activity (p< 0.05).
