ABSTRACT
Two fish species; Marcusenius psittacus and Ctenopoma petherici were collected from the landing site of fishermen at Owan River, located in Edo State, Nigeria. Both fish species are extant in various regions in West Africa. They were analyzed for their proximate composition, and mineral composition. The moisture, protein, fat and ash contents of the fishes were determined using loss in weight, micro-Kjedahl, and dry-ashing and solvent extraction methods. The species examined also contained appreciable concentrations of phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, sodium and calcium suggesting that the fish species could be used as a good source of minerals. In both specimens, the percentage for moisture content ranged from 54.1% to 54.3%, protein from 27.54% to 38.87%. The percentage for lipid content ranged from 7.65% to 14.12%. The percentage for carbohydrate ranged from 37.31% to 41.08% between both species. Minerals were also determined with the percentage for calcium ranging from 16.36% to 17.11%. Phosphorus showed significant difference between both classes. The findings of this study will contribute to existing information on proximate composition on freshwater fisheries in Nigeria.
