PROXIMATE ANALYSIS OF AFRICANNUTMEG SEEDS (Monodora myristica)

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to evaluate the nutrients and proximate contents of Monodora myristica pulverized seed obtained from four different locations in Nigeria. Proximate analysis was carried out in the Central Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Benin, Benin City Edo State. The Mondora myristica seeds obtained from different location in Awka (East), Ondo (West), Edo (South) and Abuja (North) were inspected to ensure they were evenly dried and not rotten. After that, they were milled to fine powder and stored in airtight containers for proximate analysis. Proximate composition such as moisture, ash, crude protein, ether extract, crude fibre and NFE content were determined. The experiment was replicated three (3) times and laid on Complete Randomized Design (CRD). All the data collected were subjected to statistical analysis using Analysis of Variance ANOVA of GenStat Statistical package and means were separated using Student-Newman-Keuls Test. The result showed that the highest (2.98%) ash content was recorded in Abuja, the highest (14.96%) fat content in Edo, highest (17.24%) fibre content in Abuja, highest (12.69%) moisture content in Awka, the highest (43.20%) nitrogen free extract (NFE) and the highest (12.00%) protein in Edo. The result showed that the proximate parameters; Ash, Fat, Fibre, Moisture content, Nitrogen Free Extract, Protein in all the locations, were not significantly different at 5% level of probability. The proximate composition of the species appeared consistent across the studied region, suggesting uniform nutritional characteristics and the factor due to location does not change the proximate composition of the study.
