ABSTRACT

The Benin proverbs are diverse and multi-dimensional in function and composition. The Benin proverbs of the Okhun people try to caution the men, women, youth and children against evil and advises them to shun vices and uphold virtues. Morality and virtue is considered to have a vital role in the life of anyone who wants to succeed. 7 The Benin proverbs of the Okhun people teaches the people using different proverbs for different cases. The people are to shun any act of vice as it has it consequences which is always negative. These proverbs also inform the people of their ancestors who refused to adhere to this advice and what happened to them. The proverbs of the Okhun people serves as a tool that sets good standard for future generation to thrive. They uphold virtues such as contentment, hard-work, truth, patience and dignity to teach morals and shun the vices of ingratitude, greed, bad company, disrespect, rudeness and bad upbringing. The people of Okhun community are enlightened on the reward for upholding virtues, shunning vices and adhering to correction.
