ABSTRACT

All across the world, a diverse range of medicinal herbs have been identified. Andrographis paniculata is one of those plants. The hepatoprotective properties of this leaf extract was investigated against CCl4-induced hepatic injury in rats. Extracts were obtained by separate maceration in ethanol and water. Prophylactic model was used to ascertain the hepatoprotective property of these extracts in male Wistar rats. The liver toxicity and protective effect of the plant extract was assessed by the estimation of liver biomarkers like total cholesterol, total protein, albumin and total bilirubin. The results obtained revealed that the cholesterol and albumin levels for all the groups although different in values, were not significantly (p ≥ 0.05) different from each another. For total protein, the results obtained from each of the groups showed that the total protein levels are significantly (p ≤ 0.05) different from one another. The increased levels of total protein suggest the potential enhancement in hepatic protein synthesis. The study suggests that A. paniculata could protect the liver against CCl4-induced liver toxicity.
