ABSTRACT
This study is to investigate the hepatoprotective activity of Andrographis paniculata leaves and also to establish the plant as an important medicinal herb in the treatment of liver diseases. A total of 30 rats were gotten and divided into 6 groups (1-6) ad labeled as normal control, CCl4 only, aqueous extract only, ethanol extract only, CCl4 + aqueous and CCl4 + ethanol respectively. The extracts were administered by a 2 mL injection to the rats according to their respective labels before the liver injury was intraperitoneally induced into the rats after treatment with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). The resultant effect of the study showed significant difference (p < 0.05) from the normal control when induced with CCl4 and also showed significant similarities (p > 0.05) to the normal control after treatment of the liver injury with the aqueous extract seen in the ALP and GGT results. In conclusion, the study established Andrographis paniculata as an important medicinal plant, in the treatment of liver injury and in view of this, further research should be done to understand the toxic effect of the plant.
