ABSTRACT
The world is witnessing an upsurge of proliferation of Churches in recent times. Proliferation of churches describes the multiplicity of Christian denominations. It is a feature most notable in Nigerian Christianity. What teases the imagination of Nigerians is the fact that in spite of the presence of these Christian churches and ministries, Nigeria is notoriously noted for corruption. It is this bewildering situation that elicited the researchers to critically investigate the phenomenon behind proliferation of Churches in Nigeria. The purpose of this research is to examine the remote causes of proliferation of Churches evaluate the effects of proliferation on National Development. Identify the social and economic implications, and suggest possible solutions to proliferation of Churches in Nigeria. The method adopted is historical and phenomenological. One of the many causes of the proliferation of churches is the poor economic situation of the country. This trend will continue if the poor economic profile of the country is not addressed.
