ABSTRACT
Historically, this study has shown that plantain is a staple crop and is notably one of the oldest cultivated fruit on West and Central Africa; it is known to thrive in a wide range of tropical climates. Orhionmwon is known to have a tropical climate fostering the growth and increase in plantain in the area. Plantain has played an important role in the history of Edo State. Orhionmwon is considered one of the biggest local government area among those in Benin city and it comprises of several towns and villages. This study has analyzed the origin of Orhionmwon, as Orhionmwon is said to have been created during the defunct Bendel State, history has it that Bendel state was divided into Delta and Edo state. The notable factor that enhanced the growth of plantain farming is its geography which is primarily an agricultural area. Researchers made references to its thick forest belt. The people of Orhionmwon relatively have the same tradition and customs as the people of Benin in Edo State. Their religious beliefs greatly depend on each ethnic group but they are known to take their arts and crafts which are wood carving, pottery, bead work, textile weaving, brass and bronze weaving as a significance of their cultural heritage. This study has examined the profitability of plantain farming and the production system. Historians stated the economic importance of plantain farming.
