ABSTRACT
This study examines the waste management problems in Aminu Kano Hostel, University of Benin. This was done to determine the extent to which funding impacts the effectiveness of the Waste Management
Team at the University of Benin and to ascertain the level of professional training of the staff involved.
The study also aimed to determine the impact of the recruitment of people against the mandate of the Waste Management Team of the University of Benin on maintaining a clean and safe environment. To determine the impact of monitoring and control on waste management people Aminu Kano Hostel. Depending on the nature of the research questions, primary data was used to collect the opinions of the respondents surveyed. A properly constructed survey included a sample of 250, respondents.The sample was evenly distributed between both genders as questionnaire was distributed to both men and women living in the study area. The questionnaire was divided into two batches, one distributed individually and the other door-to-door to people. Those distributed individually were picked up immediately, while those distributed door-to-door were picked up the next day. The data collected following the study was presented in graphics and subjected to descriptive analysis.
The results show that funding influences the effectiveness of the university's waste management team.It also shows that not all staff of the University's waste management team are fully trained and that monitoring and control has no effect on the University's waste management team. It was then concluded out that lack of personal hygiene was one of the major causes for the indiscriminate dumping of refuse. It was also concluded that insufficient funding of the waste management team and negative students' attitude to the staff of the waste management team were the major reasons for the poor waste management in the Aminu Kano Hostel. It was then recommended that an increase in the allocation of funds to the waste management team be made, Public awareness programs should also be conducted for team members and staff to sensitize and reorient students in their attitudes towards each other and towards staff/team members of the Waste Management Committee.
