PROBLEMS INHIBITING THE EFFECTIVE TEACHING OF GRAMMAR IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS WITHIN BENIN METROPOLIS, EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The study investigated the problems inhibiting the effective teaching of grammar in primary schools within Benin metropolis, Edo State. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised and examined. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. Questionnaire was designed and used for data collection. The sample size for the study was made up of 100 respondents. The data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentages, mean and standard deviation. Based on the findings, it was discovered that that the absence of instructional materials hinders the development of grammar skills, leading to surface-level understanding rather than deep comprehension. It was concluded that lack of instructional materials, teacher’s lack of subject mastery, overcrowded classrooms and unconducive learning environment constituted the problems inhibiting the effective teaching of grammar in primary schools within Benin metropolis, Edo State. It was therefore recommended among others that there should be a collaboration between the government and all educational stakeholders to ensure adequate provision of instructional materials for teaching and learning of grammar.
