ABSTRACT
Economics is one of the core subjects taught in the senior secondary schools in Nigeria. It is a subject taught as a unified whole to equip students with knowledge in addressing problems in the environment and society. This study is focused on the problems associated with the teaching and learning of economics in senior secondary schools in Oredo local government area Edo state. The purpose of the Study was to determine the students based problems, teachers based problems and the school based problems facing the effective teaching and learning of economics and to make recommendations based on the findings.
This study used Descriptive Survey design, Stratified Random Sampling Technique was used to select a sample size of fifty teachers and one hundred students from the targeted population. The researcher used and administered teacher's and student's questionnaires to collect data, the questionnaire was validated by the researcher's supervisor and two other lecturers in the Faculty of Education, University of Benin. The data was analyzed using mean and standard deviation.
From the study, it was revealed that the teaching and learning of economics in Oredo local government area was faced with problems. Some of the problems discovered includes lack of books ( library) in the schools, poor quality of teachers, high workload of teachers, teachers not properly supervised, unavailability and inadequacy of instructional materials and poor facilities. The study recommended among others that parents and guidance should provide books for their children and wards and also proper learning environment should be provided at school. Qualified and experienced teachers should be employed, government and school owners should equip schools with adequate facilities and instructional materials and also provide grants and incentives to teachers.
