ABSTRACT
The study investigated the problems and prospects of teaching of History in public secondary schools in Egor. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, four research questions were raised to guide the study. Descriptive survey research design was adopted by the study. The population of this study consisted of all History teachers in the thirteen (13) public secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State with a total number of thirty (30). The sample for the study was 30 History teachers from ten (13) randomly selected public secondary schools. The purposive sampling technique was adopted by the study to select the entire thirty (30) History teachers to make up the sample for the study. The findings of the study revealed The result of the analysis of (teachers’ method of teaching, gender, experience and qualification) of data presented in this study confirms that the teacher as a person is not the sole determinant of students’ academic performance because otherfactors such as students’ attitude, parental education, related factors have significant effect in the teaching of History in History. Based on the findings of the study, the study recommended among others: Teacher training programme should emphasize and re – emphasize the teacher variables that could actively affect the teaching of History, In-service training should be provided for History teachers, teachers should be encouraged and motivated to acquire higher qualifications to mention but a few.
