PRIVATIZATION POLICY AND PERFORMANCE OF PUBLIC SECTOR ORGANIZATIONS IN NIGERIA; A STUDY OF BENIN ELECTRICITY DISTRIBUTION COMPANY (BEDC)

ABSTRACT

 This research work sought to examine the privatization policy and performance of public sector organizations in Nigeria; a study of Benin electricity distribution company (BEDC). The study made use of questionnaire to obtain data from respondent. Four objectives were raised for the study. The study found that The analysis revealed that the transfer of managerial control from public to private sector in BEDC have a significant effect on its performance. It also found that the analysis revealed that exposure to a competitive market environment post-privatization significantly affects the performance of BEDC, it was also observed that the infusion of private sector capital and investment in BEDC post-privatization significantly affects its operational efficiency and service delivery. The study concluded that the establishment of a rigorous regulatory framework post-privatization emerges as a critical determinant in sculpting BEDC's performance trajectory, underscoring the intricate balance between corporate autonomy and regulatory oversight in the post-privatization landscape and thus recommended that The significant improvement in BEDC's performance following the transfer of managerial control from public to private hands underscores the effectiveness of integrating private sector management practices and operational efficiencies into public utilities. This suggests that other public sector organizations considering privatization could benefit from adopting a similar approach, ensuring that the transition of managerial control is accompanied by a comprehensive strategy to leverage private sector expertise and efficiency
