PRINCIPALS RECORD MANAGEMENT PRACTICES IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL

ABSTRACT

The study investigated the principals record management practices in public secondary school in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. Four research questions were raised. The descriptive survey research which adopted the correlational research design was employed in this study. The study population was fourty principals(40) and two hundred(200) teachers from the sixteen(16) public secondary schools in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample size comprised of One hundred (100) principals and teachers from the sixteen (16) public secondary schools in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo state. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire which was distributed to the respondents. The instrument was retrieved and analyzed using tables, frequency count and simple percentages to answer research question 1, 2, 3 and 4. The study revealed that public senior secondary school principals in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State should be incharge of admission and withdrawal register, attendance register, syllabus and scheme of work and logbook to ensure proper documentation. The study also revealed that public senior secondary schools in IkpobaOkha Local Government Area of Edo State lack digital resources like computers, external computer drive etc. to keep and store records. The findings also point out that principals record management practices is greatly effective in public senior secondary schools in ix Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State because it ensures that records are well organized for easy accessibility, facilitates communication within the school community, helps principals to stay in compliance with laws governing students privacy etc. Based on the findings it was recommended that Government of Edo State through the office of Edo State Ministry of Education should disburse funds to principals for the provisions, maintenance and repairs of facilities and equipment used for filing records in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State in order to ensure effective and efficient principals record management practice
