ABSTRACT
The study had investigated principals’ management of school records and factors militating against its effectiveness in secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. Three research questions were raised and examined in the study.
The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The target population for the study comprised all the 28 principals in the 28 public secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample was made up of all the 28 principals in the 28 public secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire was retrieved and analyzed using mean score and standard deviation.
The study had revealed that admission register, log book, scheme and record of work book, are all the school records kept by the principals in secondary schools. It also showed that inadequate storage space, technological challenges, carelessness of officers handling the records, lack of professionally trained record managers, fire outbreak, pest and rodents, and inadequate computer terminals are the factors militating against management of school records by principals in secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. Based on these findings, it was recommended that principals should hold workshops with their teachers in order to educate them on the importance of record keeping as well as procedure for keeping and utilizing information retrieved from records kept.
