PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS AWARENESS OF ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER IN IKPOBA OKHA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health disorder characterized by Inattention, Hyperactivity and Impulsivity that affects daily functioning of an individual. Children with ADHD presents symptoms such as restlessness, they are easily distracted and impatient. This study investigated Primary School teachers’ awareness of ADHD in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. To guide the study, five research questions were raised and four out of five where hypothesized. A survey research design was employed for this study. The population of the study consists of all Primary School teachers in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area (818). The sample for the study consisted of 200 Primary School teachers out of the 818 Primary School teachers. The instrument used was the questionnaire adapted from Bekle (2010) by the researcher with reliability co-efficient of 0.925. Data collected were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, ANOVA and t-test of independent sample.

The result from the study showed that Primary School teachers are unaware of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. The study further revealed that age sex and level of Edo teachers determined there awareness of ADHD. Male teachers show more awareness then female teachers and teachers with bachelors and master degree where more aware than teacher with lower degree. Also, analysis revealed no difference in teachers’ years of experience and awareness of ADHD. Based on the finding of the study, the implications of the findings were highlighted, recommendation and suggestions for further studies were made.
