ABSTRACT

The incessant increase in food price over recent years has increasingly gained public concern as a result of the negative outcomes, especially on the poor who spend a large share of their income on food. This research was undertaken to analyze price variation in food commodity between markets in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. To achieve this, the specific objectives were to describe the socio-economic characteristics of the food commodity marketers, estimate price difference between markets in the study area and examine price variability of the food commodities. A two-stage sampling procedure was used to select 77 respondent from four markets for the study area. The data collected were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The results of the descriptive statistics showed that 80.52% of food commodity marketers were female who were married 85.71%, having a mean age of 49years with household size of four.
