ABSTRACT
Background: Tricycle riders also known as Keke napep drivers, also, play a crucial role in urban transportation in Nigeria, providing an affordable and accessible means of commuting for many residents. However, their daily exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation poses a significant risk to their eye health. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can lead to various eye disorders, including photokeratitis, pterygium, cataracts. Purpose: To investigate the prevalence of UV-related eye disorders and protective behaviours among keke Napep drivers in Ugbowo, Benin city. Methods: A cross-sectional and an observational study was conducted on tricycle riders at parks in Ugbowo, between the ages of 20 and 70. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data on the participants' demographic characteristics and UVradiation protective behaviours, then an observational study was conducted to determine the prevalence of UV-related ocular disorders. Data analysis: Data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS, Version 22.0), descriptive statistics, such as frequency, percentages, mean, and standard deviation.Chi-square test was also used to check for relationships. Result: The study found pterygium to be the most prevalent UV-related ocular disorder among tricycle riders.
