ABSTRACT
This study was on the prevalence of suicidal ideation among students of the university of Benin, Benin City, Edo state. The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of suicidal ideation among students of the university of Benin, to examine the specific risk factors that are associated with Suicidal thoughts, and figure out ways these thoughts can be prevented/ reduced through the help of guidance and counselling. To guide this study, three research questions were created. Furthermore, the study was anchored on the social integration and moral regulation theory. The research method was cross sectional, while the research instrument was a questionnaire. Findings from the study showed a high prevalence of suicidal ideation among students, it also shows various factors in the learning environment that pose as stressors and contribute to students resolving to Suicidal thoughts. Academic pressure, financial crisis, difficult adjustment to a new learning environment all pose as a risk factor for having thoughts of suicide. The findings also showed that majority of the students are not aware and have not had a session with the guidance and counselling department in the learning environment, while few that has had sessions showed less satisfaction from sessions had. Based on the findings, it was recommended among other things that the instruction should conduct a comprehensive review of the guidance and counseling services and also set up mental health education and awareness campaigns to reduce stigma and encourage help-seeking behaviors among students of the university.
