ABSTRACT
The mosquito-borne disease, Malaria caused by Plasmodium, is a life-threatening disease of major health concern globally, the bulk of this global burden disease is in sub-Saharan Africa. The susceptible demographic group to this disease are the children and teenagers. The purpose of this retrospective research is to determine the prevalence of malaria among children and teenagers that visited the University of Benin Health Centre in Benin-City, Edo State, Nigeria. Medical records of patients who visited the University of Benin Health Center between July and December 2023 were reviewed. The study included patients aged 0 to 12 (children) and 13 to 18 (teenagers) years old, and malaria cases confirmed via laboratory tests. The study also examined demographic data such as gender and age. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were conducted to assess malaria prevalence patterns and related variables. The results indicate a significant burden of malaria among children and teenagers ; 4,464 cases (68.8%), at the health Centre, with statistically significant differences observed among age groups and seasons. This study also demonstrates how control strategies affect the prevalence of malaria in this community. A thorough understanding of this disease's prevalence and contributing factors is required for effective prevention and control among children and teenagers. The findings of this retrospective study will provide insightful information to the University of Benin for Improvement on policies and programmes targeted at lowering the incidence of malaria among this susceptible demographic.
