The study was carried out to investigate the socio-economic characteristics of snail sellers and the distribution and abundance of water snail at illushi market, Esan South East local government area, Edo State. Structured questionnaires and oral interviews were used to obtain information on socio economic characteristics of snail marketers in the selected market. Freshwater snails Pila africana were purchased from the snail marketers monthly fromOctober 2020 to March 2021. Morphometric measurement was performed using caliper and life weight were recorded using camry analytical balance. The data from the field was codedand analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences students (SPSS version24.0) software. Statistical difference was analyzed using Anova and Duncan multiple range test for the separation of means at 5% probability level. The study identifies and determine the species composition at this community and the relative abundance, the morphemetric differences between species. A total of 649 snails of the sub-class Prosobranchia, belonging to the family Ampullariidae was identified after collection during the sampling period. These were monthly variation in the population and abundance of Pila Africana which happened to have been theonly specie that was identified during the sampling period. From the measurement of the morphometric characteristics for the months, November had the highest mean weight, shell length, shell width and aperture length, while the highest mean aperture was recorded in March, than the rest months. Conclusively the result for this study can be use as a base line key of identification for Pilaafricana.
