SUMMARY OF MAJOR FINDINGS
Based on the research questions and objectives, the findings of this study were structured in the following representation as well as the summary which includes:
Objective 1: To examine the causes of domestic violence among couples residing in Benin metropolis
The findings of the study have been able to prove that there causes to the menace of domestic violence among couples in Benin metropolis, as response from the subject of this study reveals that the incidence of domestic violence is as frequent occurrence though with different degree of timing and the listed causes are childlessness, infidelity, miscommunication, lack of money, disrespect or abuse, incompatibility as these causes were either tagged natural or man-made.
The research also shown that shown that that the respondents have prior knowledge of the subject matter as they shows sigs that they have either witness it or experiences it in one point or the other within the study location. This is supported by Jewkes (2002) who affirmed that couples in poverty may be more likely to experience domestic violence, due to increased stress and conflicts about finances and other aspects
The finding also goes with literatures that stated that Abusers abuse in order to establish and maintain control over the partner. Abusers’ effort to dominate have been attributed to low self-esteem or feelings of inadequacy, unresolved childhood conflicts, the stress of poverty, hostility and resentment toward women (misogyny), personality disorders, genetic tendencies and social cultural influences(encyclopedia, 2012).
Objective 2: Ascertain the vulnerable group among couples residing in Benin metropolis
The results from this objectives was able to revealed that women are the likely victims of domestic violence and this makes them more vulnerable, as they respondents gave reasons to justify their claim some of which are; women seen as weaker sex, men having domineering attitude, power displayed by the male folks, talking too much by women, societal structure that favours men, religious dogma that has shaped the spiritual circle of the human reasoning and many others. From this also society sees the vulnerable groups as powerless, senseless in some capacity, not active thinkers, and not self-reliant. While on the perpetuators, they are seen as bully, not cultured, not human and that many of them lack respect for persons as this makes them anti-social in social sphere.
The findings of this objective support the works of Watts and Zimmerman (2002) who posited that the most common forms of violence are against women and they are physical, sexual and emotional abuse by a woman’s husband or intimate partner. From his surveys it shows that as high as 58% of women have experienced physical abuse by an intimate made partner and that as many as one-half of women have experience domestic or family violence.
