ABSTRACT
The research on the topic "Prevalence of depression among student population of the University of Benin" was carried out by the researcher to describe the proportion of the student population that has depression and to estimate how widespread depression is in the student population of the university of Benin.
The study adopted the survey research design. The study population involved 200 students that was drawn using simple random sampling technique form a total of four faculties in the University of Benin with 50 students from each faculty. The findings of the study revealed that the prevalence rate of depression among the student population of the University of Benin appears to be 32.4% which is considered generally to be high. It was also observed that the prevalence rate of depression in the different faculties in the University of Benin appear to be different, and finally, it was discovered that The the strategies employed by the University of Benin to curb depression seem to be ineffective.
At the end of the study it was recommended that current strategies such as provision of mental health resources like books and so on should be improved on and other strategies such as occasional mental health talks and conferences should be done by health educators and other experts. More so, the study provides relevant materials for students and other researchers undertaking similar research performance.
