ABSTRACT
Antibiotics resistance has emerged as a serious threat to public health and a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. With the rising global consumption of poultry meat by humans, poultry birds health implication is of paramount concern. This study was aimed at investigating the prevalence of colistin-resistant Pseudomonas species from poultry birds in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. A total of nineteen (19) fresh poultry droppings were collected aseptically over a period of twenty (20) days from three (3) different farms. Total heterotrophic bacterial and Pseudomonas counts were done by spread plate method using Nutrient Agar and Centrimide Agar Base respectively. The antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of the Pseudomonas spp. were carried out according to the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. Phenotypic resistance of the isolates to colistin was determined using the colistin antibiotics disc. The mean heterotrophic count of all 19 samples ranged from 29.67±7.09cfu/g to 240.33±53.26cfu/g, while the mean Pseudomonas counts were generally low, and ranged from 0.00±0.00cfu/g to 1.00±1.73cfu/g. All Pseudomonas species were resistant to ceftazidime, cefuroxime, augmentin, cefixime and nitrofurantion, as well as sensitivite to ciprofloxacin. Although, majority of the isolates were observed to be resistant to sparfloxacin (93.55%) and sensitive to ciprofloxacin (94.29%). The Multidrug resistant index recorded was between 41.18% and 94.12%. Out of the thirty-five (35) isolates screened for colistin-resistance, twenty three (23) were observed to be colistin-resistant. The occurrence of substantial live threatening pathogens from animal sources necessitates thorough enquiry into the use of antibiotics in poultry farms and how they perpetuate the problem of antibiotics resistance.
