ABSTRACT
Colistin, a widely used feed additive for farm animal has posed a serious problem to public health in recent years. This research was aimed at investigating the prevalence of Colistin resistant Pseudomonas species in different pig farms located in BeninCity, Edo State, Nigeria.A total of sixteen samples were taken from two farms.Samples were made into mixture at a ten-fold dilution and were cultured in triplicate.The mean heterotrophic count was recorded based on the number of colonies.All Pseudomonas isolates were tested for their resistance and/or sensitivity to selected antibiotics. The total heterotrophic count of farm A ranges from 19.66±14.01 to 31.00±20.80, 56.00±22.64, 61.33±28.09, 112.00±15.71, 138.33±59.18, 150.00±61.55, 167.66±116.64 and Farm B from 23.33± 7.76 to 53.33±40.21, 58.00±32.18, 63.33±53.46, 69.00±20.66, 77.00±14.52, 78.33±19.85, 239.66±67.02. CAZ, CXM and AUG were (100%) resistance for all the pseudomonas isolate. It was observed in this study that Farm A had high frequency of occurrence of Colistin resistance pseudomonas specie (57.14%) compare to Farm B. Colistin used as feed additive should be continuously monitored in food producing animals in most farms
