PREGNANCY OUTCOME STUDY OF MIXTURE OF PURPLE CABBAGE (Brassica oleracea Capitata)

ABSTRACT

This Study was carried out to evaluate the effect of N-Hexane extracts of mixture of purple and green cabbage (B. Oleracea) on the three (3) stages of pregnancy and pregnancy outcome. The Adult female rats were mated with male rats and after confirmation of pregnancy, the rats were grouped into five (5) groups each for first, second and third trimester of pregnancy. Group I, the control group was administered distilled water. Group ii, The Positive Control Group was Administered 10 Mg/Kg of Diethylstilbestrol. Group iii, The Negative Control Group was Administered 0.5 iu Of Oxytocin. Group iv, v And vi were administered 50, 250 And 1000 Mg/Kg of Extract of B. Oleracea respectively. During the period of administration, the weights of the rats were taken on Day 0, Day 7, Day 10, Day 17 and Day 21 to determine the effect of the extract on the weight of the gravid dams. On Day 10th And 17th, gravid dams were sacrificed, blood was withdrawn from the dams, centrifuged at 3000 Revolutions Per Minute For 10 minutes and serum obtained was analyzed using enzyme linked immune-sorbent assay kit to determine serum progesterone levels respectively. number of implantation sites and width of uterine horns of the gravid dams were examined on Day 10 And Day 17 of pregnancy respectively. pups parameters were observed at the time of delivery at the third trimester. The results revealed significant increase in the width of uterine horn in the treatment groups (P< 0.0001), birth weight of pups (P< 0.05), Crown-Rump Length (P<0.05), Tail Length (P<0.01) and serum progesterone levels (P<0.01, P<0.0001) on the 10th And 17th day of pregnancy respectively. This study thereby showed for the first time that the N-Hexane Extracts of purple and Green Cabbage (B. Oleracea) improved the outcome of pregnancy, was safe at all stages of pregnancy and also prolonged the onset of labour.
