ABSTRACT
Rainfall is an important component of the hydrological cycle. The amount of rainfall varies from place to place and over time depending on various factors which include topography, elevation, distance from large body of water and climate change. Climate change is a great contributor to rainfall variability. This study presents a comprehensive geospatial assessment of rainfall patterns in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of Nigeria over a four-decade period from 1982 to 2022 with the aim of assessing if there is any significant difference over the years. Understanding the temporal and spatial variations in rainfall is essential for effective water resource management, agriculture, urban planning, and disaster preparedness. Utilizing geospatial technologies such as Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing, this research analyzed historical rainfall data obtained from satellite rainfall product. This study employed various spatial and statistical techniques to assess rainfall patterns and trend. The findings of this study revealed significant variations (p value=0.024) in rainfall patterns within the FCT. It identified key trends, such as increasing rainfall trend, the identification of dry and wet years and the uneven spatial distribution of rainfall over the past four decades. The results of this geospatial assessment provide valuable insights into the climate dynamics of the region and can serve as a basis for evidencebased decision-making and policy formulation. Ultimately, the research underscores the importance of incorporating geospatial analysis in climate studies to enhance our ability to adapt to changing environmental conditions and mitigate potential risks associated with these changes.
