ABSTRACT
The research on the topic “Pre- marital sex as causative factor to the increase of poor academic performance among students of University of Benin" Three research questions were raised to guide this study. The descriptive research design was adopted for this study and random sampling technique was used to select 4 faculties in university of Benin, The sample size for this study was 200 respondents who were purposing selected from the 4 Faculties. Data was collected from the 200 respondents using a closed ended questionnaire with twenty (20) items. The data collected was analyzed and interpreted using simple frequencies and percentage. Based on the data collected and analyzed, it was discovered that premarital sex has a negative impact on students’ academic performance, therefore it is a causative factor to the increase of poor academic performance among students in university of Benin. Also from the data collected and analyzed, it is observed that factors such as media and popular culture, absence of sex education, financial benefits (poverty), easy access to sexual health services and contraceptive influence the practices of premarital sex among students of university of Benin. It was recommended that providing comprehensive and age-appropriate information, teachers can help students make informed decisions and develop healthy attitudes towards sex. Regarding the influence of media and popular culture, it's important to recognize that they can have a significant impact on young minds. Limiting their power in promoting premarital sexual activity can be beneficial in ensuring that students receive accurate information and are not influenced by unrealistic or harmful portrayals. Parents also have a role to play in educating their children about premarital sexual activities. Open and honest communication within the family can help foster a safe and supportive environment where children feel comfortable discussing these topics. By actively engaging in conversations and providing guidance, parents can contribute to their children's understanding and decision-making. Religious organizations can also play a vital role in sex education. They can provide moral and ethical perspectives, emphasizing values such as respect, consent, and responsible behavior. Inclusion of religious teachings can help students develop a well-rounded understanding of sex and relationships. In conclusion, sex education should be a collaborative effort involving teachers, parents, media, and religious organizations. By working together, we can ensure that students receive comprehensive and accurate information to make informed choices and lead healthy lives.
