ABSTRACT
This study investigated political violence and students’ participation in students’ union elections in University of Benin City. The study sought to find out the factors contributing to political violence, the impact of political violence on student participation, gender disparities, and the inclusiveness of student union elections at the University of Benin City. The sample, which used a descriptive methodology, comprises of 150 undergraduate students, who were selected at random from among the population of 300 undergraduate students in University of Benin City. One research instrument was used to elicit information from the respondents which is political violence and students’ participation in student union election questionnaire. Findings indicate that political tension, rivalry among candidates, and the presence of political violence are major factors undermining the credibility of elections, discouraging participation, and compromising campus safety. Further analysis reveals that fear of political violence, lack of access to candidate information, peer pressure, and competition among candidates significantly deter student participation in elections. Also, the study identifies significant perceptions of gender disparities in participation levels, interest, and role suitability, despite some recognition of equal opportunities for female candidates. Based on the findings, it was recommended that efforts should be made to provide proactive measures to address the underlying causes of political violence, promote electoral integrity, encourage student engagement, and ensure a safe and inclusive campuses environment conducive to democratic processes. Gender-related challenges and perceptions may influence the extent of gender equality in student union electoral participation. Therefore addressing these perceptions and barriers is essential to promoting more inclusive and equitable student governance processes.
