SUMMARY
This work examined the various linguistic politeness strategies obtainable in Okpameri. In the chapter one, the topic was introduced and the subject matter was explained. Also, the history/ origin was explained.
Chapter two reviewed related literatures on politeness, which is made up of conceptual review, previous study and present day study. Conceptual review focused on the concept of ‘face’ as proposed by Goffman.
Previous study: it examined previous works on politeness. It reviewed various politeness theories and their proponent, and views of pragmatic scholars on politeness. Also this chapter examined the theoretical framework of Brown and Levison.
Chapter three presents data using the Brown and Levison’s politeness theory strategy. The data is presented in four parts: positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, bald on- record and off- record.
Chapter four analyses the data using the four politeness strategy proposed by Brown and Levison.
