ABSTRACT
This study examined linguistic politeness in Peter Gregory Obi’s Electoral speeches and carried out a meticulous analysis on why he uses politeness maxim in his speeches, his reasons for using politeness maxim and how he used them. The analyzed texts in this research were sourced from video recordings from news channels and some news website. The texts and excerpts were analyzed using Geoffrey Leech’s Maxims of politeness, which are approbation, tact and sympathy maxims. In the analysis, we concluded that Peter Obi employs tact to navigate potentially sensitive issues, approbation to appeal to his audience’s values and deploys sympathy to establish a connection with Nigerians.
