ABSTRACT
This study focuses on politeness device in Edo. It aims to investigate politeness in general and politeness device in Edo. Data for the study was gathered before and during the coronation of Ọba Ẹwuare the second (Ogidant H) in Uselu in 2016. The theoretical framework is functional and systemic grammar. Findings revealed different address forms are used to address the Ọba when is asleep, sick and to praise. The study recommends that these different address terms for the Ọba should be taught to people, integrates into the educational system and the contexts taking into consideration.
